Kentucky Derby favorite Uncle Mo stunned in New York

Previously undefeated Uncle Mo, viewed throughout the winter as an overwhelming Kentucky Derby favorite and a Triple Crown threat, suffered a stunning upset when he finished third in Saturday's $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The 2-year-old champion's first loss, to a pair of 3-year-olds with minimal credentials in Toby's Corner and Arthur's Tale, was so inexplicable that trainer Todd Pletcher was noncommital about going on to the Derby on May 7.
"We will leave it up to Uncle Mo," said Pletcher, who will keep a close eye on the condition of his prized 3-year-old. "I have no idea."

The son of Indian Charlie did not resemble the colt who flashed brilliance while dominating his first four starts by 27 lengths at four different tracks, leaving his connections searching for an injury or something that might explain the seemingly inexplicable.
Nothing went quite right from the moment Uncle Mo hesitated before entering the starting gate. John Velazquez, the only jockey who has ever been aboard, noted that he never felt comfortable, even as he maintained his customary role as pacesetter and covered the opening three-quarters of a mile in a solid 1:12 1/5 seconds.
"He was pulling the whole way," Velazquez said. "He was never in a relaxed mode."
The Derby's classic 1 1/4-mile distance looms as a huge question mark for Uncle Mo after he showed little punch in the stretch in his first try at 1 1/8 miles.
"When it was time to go again," Velazquez said, "he came flat down the lane."
The result was mind-boggling because the victor, Toby's Corner, was beaten by 4 and 1/4 lengths in finishing third to Stay Thirsty in the Gotham Stakes on March 5. Uncle Mo invariably outworks Stay Thirsty, his stablemate, during morning drills.
"Sometimes horses and athletes have bad days," owner Mike Repole said. "This was a bad day."
Uncle Mo had shown no vulnerability in any of his first four starts. He made a smashing debut, overpowering the field by 14 1/4 lengths last Aug. 28 at New York's Saratoga Race Course.
He handled the leap to Grade 1 competition with ease, dominating the Champagne Stakes by 4 3/4 lengths, before driving to a 4 1/4-length score in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Nov. 6 at Churchill Downs that seemed auspicious at the time.
Interestingly, Pletcher asked little of Uncle Mo in his 3-year-old debut. After initially pointing to the Tampa Bay Derby, he opted for an easier path by electing to run him in the one-mile Timely Writer Stakes at Gulfstream Park in Florida on March 12. That race amounted to nothing more than a vigorous workout as the colt led gate-to-wire in prevailing by 3 3/4 lengths.
The Derby suddenly becomes a contest without a clear-cut favorite. Premier Pegasus and Jaycito, the top two choices earlier this week in the Santa Anita Derby, were scratched due to injuries, muddling the picture before Uncle Mo's flop.
Dialed In, the last-to-first victor in the Florida Derby, could replace Uncle Mo as the favorite. The Factor, who is expected to go off as the top choice in next Saturday's Arkanas Derby, also could inherit that role if he runs to lofty expectations.
Trainer H. Graham Motion admitted he had never considered running Toby's Corner in the Run for the Roses — until now.
"It's obviously a very wide open group," he said, "and I kind of think he ranks right up there with the top ones."

Celtics aren't dead yet, not when they still know the game

If you predict the end of the world, someday you might be right. If you predict the onset of a cold, someday you will be right. And if you have posited all along that the Boston Celtics' varicose legs have reached the end of their usefulness, you might finally, this spring, be proven right.

If so -- if the Celtics' well- fermented trio of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce is facing one last playoff run together -- their appearance at Target Center on Sunday night provided a milestone of sorts for Wolves fans, as well as the majority of the attendees, who wore Celtics jerseys to the arena.

Whatever their fate in the bruising Eastern Conference playoffs, these Celtics at least provided an object lesson that probably sailed right over the Wolves' heads like a Jonny Flynn no-look pass.

This might sound like a strange assessment of the team with the second-worst record in basketball, a team that would have the worst record in basketball if LeBron James had stayed in Cleveland, but the Wolves actually have made good on their promise to upgrade their talent. They are, per David Kahn's mantra, taller, faster and more athletic.

What the Celtics prove is that winning in the NBA is not merely the result of accumulating talented physical specimens. Despite clichés to the contrary, winning in the NBA is about cohesion and team defense, grit and coaching, and offensive decision-making.

That's why, when Wolves owner Glen Taylor approved the trade of Garnett to the Celtics, he unwittingly did Garnett, one of the most prolific and creative cussers in NBA history, a bigger favor than the man who invented the seven-second delay.

Taylor sent Garnett, a prideful defender and consummate on-the-court professional, to a team of his peers.

So while the Celtics are a work in progress after trading Kendrick Perkins and waiting for Rajon Rondo and Shaquille O'Neal to return from injuries, they might remain the most unpleasant team you can play in a long series.

During the Celtics' 85-82 victory, Garnett imposed his will near the basket and in the locker room. At halftime, with the Celtics beginning to squandering a 25-point lead and newly acquired center Nenad Krstic struggling to score, Garnett and Pierce encouraged him to dunk the ball with aggression every time he neared the rim.

"I think the new guys are just adjusting to how we play," Garnett said. "We do things all-out here. We're not casual with anything we do. We're very aggressive, very firm here, and coming from the West Coast to the Eastern Conference is a transition."

Anthony Randolph noticed. The Wolves' latest project had performed spectacularly in his past two starts. The Celtics smacked him every time he touched the ball. Randolph, late of the Golden State Warriors, finished with three points and four rebounds in 16 minutes, demonstrating the difference between possessing talent and knowing how to use it.

"We just took away his first option, made him do things he didn't want to do," Garnett said. "Our bigs did a good job of taking it to him.

"He's known to foul, he's foul-prone, and he never got into a rhythm. I thought we did a good job of just taking him totally out of the game."

Garnett, wearing a purple sweater and tie after the game, said he returns to the Twin Cities every summer. "This is my second home," he said. "I've always felt very at peace here. The fans have always treated me very dearly.

"... I still come here in the summertime. I'm probably not downtown as much as y'all would like to see me but believe me, I'm in the vicinity, I'm in the area, I'm on the lake doing what I usually do."

The Celtics' latest struggles might be a sign that their old legs are nearing the end. After his latest triumphant return to Target Center, Garnett didn't sound interested in any concession speeches.

"I'm very intrigued," he said of his team's potential. "I've seen it. I don't think the world has seen it. We've yet to be full-throttle.

"But promising days are ahead. I'm very anxious to see what we'll look like."

Someday, these Celtics will grow too old to thrive during the grind of the NBA playoffs. Garnett doesn't think "someday" is coming anytime soon.

How do you promote your sales by the College Board

In this age of Internet marketing and promotion are increasingly the new definitions that were previously unknown to science. Internet marketing techniques for new and innovative methods of promoting professional organizations have decided to go for the promotion of your company and products in this brutally competitive world. And for companies that target young consumers, regardless of size, budget or manpower, the Internet is a means of information is stronger. Like the great majority of online visitors are children and young adults who use online portals take over the Internet as a means of marketing can save a lot in the near future can. Among the many ways to promote a business online college and university forums forums some of the platforms are the most lucrative for the promotion of technical textiles. With a more lenient towards moderation and publishing, college forums can often be used for various promotional activities.

There are several ways a company with online forums to promote university. For example, a clothing store's new fashion line support on the forums cheap jerseys of the University through the fiction members to create threads in the forum. But not enough to make a single thread and leave it at that. We must give the line more and more observations and comments as possible impetus for the promotion.

Always soft sell works in academic forums, compared the direct sale and is armor. Cards ace Wainwright needs season-ending surgery

JUPITER, Fla. -- St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and miss the entire season.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak confirmed the news Thursday from spring training camp. He said he learned the severity of the injury Wednesday night after the 29-year-old pitcher sought a second opinion from Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles. A surgery date is not set.

"It's not a real surprise to us but certainly a disappointment," Mozeliak said. "As we look to the future now we certainly believe we still have a strong starting rotation. Now we're going to have to look to try to fill it in terms of a fifth spot."

Wainwright, who won 20 games last year and was runner-up for the NL Cy Young Award, felt arm stiffness after Monday's throwing session. He had experienced soreness toward the end of last season and didn't pitch in September. He had minor arm issues in 1998 and 2004.

His loss leaves the team with a big hole in a starting rotation that for now includes Chris Carpenter, Kyle Lohse, Jaime Garcia and Jake Westbrook.

"That's a big guy to miss," Lohse said. "We still got to go out there and play. Nobody is going to feel sorry for us. We still have to go out there and do our jobs."

The Cardinals entered spring training with a rotation that Mozeliak said he would stack up against any in baseball.

"You're losing an ace," Mozeliak said. "It's not something you can replace overnight. I would also say we have four quality pitchers. It's not exactly like we have no bullets left."

Manager Tony La Russa said Wednesday, before learning the extent of the injury, that he didn't expect the Cardinals to try to replace Wainwright through a trade or free agent signing of someone like Kevin Millwood or possibly Pedro Martinez.

But that could change.

"You follow camps and see if something develops where it's a good fit," La Russa said. "But right now it's not a good fit because were going to cover it from within. We'll pay attention though, that's part of what you do in spring training. We have scouts all over and we'll watch box scores."

La Russa has six or seven pitchers in camp who will have the opportunity to join the rotation.

"Guys are assigned at least a couple appearances over the first eight to 10 games and then a lot of those decisions make themselves," La Russa said.

The list is headed by reliever Kyle McClellan and includes P.J. Walters, Lance Lynn, Adam Ottavino, Ian Snell, Brian Tallet and Brandon Dickson. McClellan and Tallet are penciled in to join the Cardinals bullpen. Walters, Lynn, Ottavino and Dickson helped comprise the Triple-A Memphis staff for most of last season.

La Russa sees plenty of work for the candidates during the early spring training games.

"Early it's not a problem," he said. "Even if you want to give a guy a look or something the squeeze comes after you've gone through the group twice, when you start really getting the guys (work) that are on the club. So we'll see where we are."

Tommy John surgery reconstructs the ulnar collateral ligament, replacing it with a tendon from elsewhere in the body. The procedure requires months of recovery. It is named after the pitcher who in 1974 became the first professional athlete to successfully have had the operation.

Mozeliak said spoke to Wainwright late Wednesday.

"Obviously he's down," Mozeliak said. "But he certainly understands what's at stake and he's disappointed but I think he's also relieved to know what the next step looks like."

The 6-foot-7 Wainwright went 20-11 with a 2.42 ERA last season, finishing behind Philadelphia's Roy Halladay in Cy Young balloting while making his first All-Star team. His 2.93 ERA since 2007 trails only Halladay, and no NL pitcher threw more than Wainwright's 463 1-3 innings during the past two seasons.

In 2009, Wainwright led the NL in wins (19), innings (233) and starts (34), winning a Gold Glove while finishing third in Cy Young voting.
